In the D&B section (hour 1) of this show it’s all about two labels. Reinforced & Subtle Audio. As you may or may not know, Subtle Audio is my own project that I’ve been working on for the last 5 years or so and I’m sure you will all have heard of Reinforced Records, the influential and inspirational label run by Marc Mac & Dego of 4-Hero fame alongside Gus Lawrence & Ian Bardouille (who were also involved in some of the early 4-Hero productions). It’s actually the 20th anniversary of the 1st release on Reinforced Records this month (May) and in a nice symmetry (given that Reinforced were a big inspiration for my own label project) it’s the 5th birthday of Subtle Audio too.

I left out alot of the classic Reinforced stuff from the early nineties as the tempo was so much slower it would have been difficult to make them fit. Also, I was restricted to what I had time to grab before hitting the studio. Still, lots of goodies in here! I wanted to focus on some of the lesser known bits on the label anyway, stuff from Vortexion, Immortal Minds and Delta & Format for example. The oldest tune in the mix is “Mayday Mayday” by Nasty Habits (aka Doc Scott) – released in 1992 on the same 12″ as the seminal “Here Come The Drumz”. Of course, it was never going to get as much attention as that tune but still, to this day, it’s one of my favourite pieces from the hardcore days. On the Subtle Audio side of things, I focussed mainly on the brand new releases by Sub & Polska but also featured older releases by Macc & dgoHn and Dissident. The Sub 12″ vinyl release is on general release through ST Holdings distribution on May 17th with the Polska 12″ following on June 14th. Polska’s 2xCD album “2nd Rate” will be released in mid-July. But if you can’t wait that long to get these in your local shop then you can grab them all from the Subtle Audio Shop right now! There are also some bonus download tracks that come with orders for the Polska CD / Vinyl bundle on the site – “House Fire” (included in this archive) is one of those.

Into hour 2 and it kicks off with some more nostalgia, this time on the techno tip from Detroit’s Juan Atkins (aka Model 500). “Milky Way” is taken from his 1995 album “Deep Space” on R&S. The album was remastered and re-released in 2008 in case you still don’t have it! Also on the 4/4 tip are tunes from Klute, Jus Ed and Immer.Chic.

Onto another legend of the Detroit techno / electronic music scene next – Anthony “Shake” Shakir. This guy has released countless classics in a range of styles over the last 20 years but never really seemed to get the attention he deserved. Maybe the recently released Rush Hour Records compliation “Frictionalism” (featuring selected works from 1994 – 2009) will help highlight his genius.

Some recent Dubstep bits follow from Peverelist, Kontext (remixed by Ramadanman) and Furesshu and then to vary it up, some breakbeat around that tempo from the aforementioned Polska album on Subtle Audio and also one of my favourite new producers – AQF.

Actress has a new album out called “Splazsh” which I haven’t had time to check just yet, but I like the sound of the last 12″ release “Paint, Straw and Bubbles” – check that here.

The final word goes to Reinforced Records. They weren’t just about Jungle and Drum & Bass and often dipped into other styles and tempos on certain releases. Procedure 769’s “The Chamber” is moody, instrumental hip-hop at it’s best.
